All About Sleep Sacks

Are sleep sacks safe for babies?
Yes, sleep sacks are considered safe for babies when used correctly, as noted by the American Academy of Pediatrics. They eliminate the risk of suffocation or overheating associated with loose blankets in the crib. Sleep of Mind sleep sacks have the added benefit of our patent-pending reflective technology, so you can see your little one’s chest moving with each breath. Our garments meet and exceed all regulated child sleepwear safety standards for both the USA and Canada. They have been tested by independent 3rd party labs in the USA, and also meet GOTS and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 guidelines, making them free of harmful substances. You can learn more about this on our Safety page.

Currently, we offer one size (small). Consult our size chart to make sure your baby will fit within the proper garment specifications. Warm iron if necessary. Do not iron fastening, zipper or print. Do not dry clean. Stop using at the first signs of damage.
When & Where Sleep Sacks Are Used And Avoided
Are sleep sacks suitable for traveling with a baby?
Yes, sleep sacks can provide a familiar sleep environment for babies while traveling, helping them feel secure and comfortable in new surroundings.
Can a baby wear a sleep sack while being held or carried?
It's not recommended for babies to wear sleep sacks while being held or carried, as it can pose a safety hazard. Save the sleep sack for use in the crib or bassinet.
Are there any potential drawbacks or risks associated with using a sleep sack?
While sleep sacks are generally safe, it's essential to ensure a proper fit to prevent the baby from slipping down into the sack. Do not use the sleep sack if your baby’s arms or head can pass through the neck hole, or if the neck hole is too restrictive for the infant.
Can a sleep sack be used for older children or toddlers?
Yes! We recommend using a sleep sack until your child is capable of covering themselves with a blanket and is out of the crib.
Are there any tips for helping a baby adjust to using a sleep sack?
Introduce the sleep sack for the first time at bedtime when a child is the most drowsy, when melatonin secretion is most prominent. After one night, your child should be well adjusted to keep sleeping in the sleep sack for daytime sleep too.
Is it safe to leave my baby if they roll over in the sleep sack?
Although caregivers must always place their baby down into their sleep space on their back, if your baby is strong enough to roll over on their own, they are safe to stay that way for sleep, even when wearing a sleep sack. If you are ever unsure of your child’s safety, please seek medical advice and don’t hesitate to check on your child.

What type of camera do I need?
Any baby monitor or security camera with night vision capabilities should work to view the reflective results of our garment. Just ensure you follow the camera placement instructions on the How it Works page.
Why don’t I see the reflections from my Sleep of Mind sleep sack or swaddle?
Usually this is due to your baby monitor placement not being overtop of the sleep space or being too far away. Follow the instructions on our How it Works page. Make sure your camera is directly over top of your child’s crib or bassinet and is no more than 6 feet away from your child. Make sure your child’s room is pitch black so that the only light is coming from the camera. All About Swaddles
What is swaddling?
Swaddling is the practice of snugly wrapping a baby in a blanket or cloth to provide warmth and security, mimicking the feeling of being in the womb.
At what age can I start swaddling my baby?
Swaddling is typically safe and encouraged for newborns. It's essential to stop swaddling once the baby starts showing signs of rolling over, typically around 12 weeks of age but it can be as early as 8 weeks.
How does swaddling benefit babies?
Swaddling can make babies feel secure (like being in the womb) and calms their startle reflex, promoting better sleep by preventing sudden movements that can wake them up.
Can swaddling help with colic or fussiness?
Swaddling can sometimes calm a fussy or colicky baby by providing a comforting environment and reducing the baby's startle reflex. If you're concerned your baby may have colic or some related condition, we always recommend to speak to your pediatrician.
Can I use a swaddle for naps and nighttime sleep?
Yes, swaddling can be used for both naps and nighttime sleep to make babies feel secure and promote better sleep patterns.
How do I transition my baby out of swaddling?
Switch to the Sleep of Mind sleep sack starting at bedtime, when a child is the most drowsy and melatonin secretion is most prominent. After one night, your child should be adjusted enough to keep sleeping in the sleep sack for daytime sleep.
Choosing The Right Swaddle
Are there different types of swaddles?
Yes, there are various types of swaddles, including traditional swaddle blankets, swaddle wraps with Velcro or snaps, and swaddle sacks with zipper closures. Our Sleep of Mind swaddle was designed as an arms-up swaddle, the position that most closely aligns to an infant’s positioning in the womb. And it’s one that newborns love! The arms-up position means babies still have access to their hands to self-soothe, but aren’t too distracted by them, meaning longer stretches of sleep. This position also reflects a natural safe sleep position for newborns, protecting them from accidentally rolling while on their back. The more comfortable baby is, the better both baby and parents sleep.
How can I tell if the swaddle fits properly?
Make sure your baby's head can't pass through the neck hole, and be covered by the garment. Also make sure the neck hole is not too small and fits well around the neck allowing freedom of movement. Then fold the wrap snugly over your baby's torso, under the arms, so it feels like a gentle hug. Currently, we offer one size (newborn). Consult our size chart to make sure your baby will fit within the proper garment specifications. Sign up for our newsletter or follow us on social media to be the first to hear when we launch more sizes.
Can swaddles help with newborn sleep?
Yes, swaddles can help with sleep as the womb-to-world transition can be challenging. Swaddling provides a similar, cozy feeling to the womb so newborns can feel safer and more secure falling asleep.

Swaddle Safety & Usage
Is swaddling safe for babies?
Swaddling can be safe when done correctly. It's important to follow proper swaddling techniques to reduce the risk of hip dysplasia and overheating. Our swaddles are hip-friendly, allowing babies full freedom in the hips and legs. Please follow our undergarment suggestions to avoid overheating. The ideal room temperature is 20 degrees celsius or 70 degrees fahrenheit.
How do I know if my baby is too hot or too cold?
Check your baby's temperature by feeling their chest or the back of their neck. They should feel comfortably warm, but not sweaty or overheated. Adjust clothing layers or the room temperature as needed.
When should I stop swaddling my baby?
Stop swaddling your baby once they start showing signs of rolling over, usually around 2-3 months of age. Continuing to swaddle after this point can increase the risk of suffocation if your baby rolls over onto their front and does not have access to their arms to move their head to a safe position for breathing. Once they start rolling, you can transition to our sleep sack.
Are there any safety guidelines to follow when swaddling?
Yes, do not use if your baby’s arms or head can pass through the neck hole, or if the neck hole is too restrictive for the infant. Affix the belly wrap snugly, but not too tight as to restrict breathing.
Can swaddling prevent SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)?
While swaddling alone cannot prevent SIDS, it is part of a safe sleep environment recommended by pediatricians and organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics. Please visit their site to read more about how to reduce the risk of SIDS.
Is it safe to leave my baby if they roll over in the swaddle?
No, a swaddled baby should never be left on their front, even if they roll over on their own. Remove the swaddle immediately and transition to the Sleep of Mind Sleep Sack.
